The other night as I settled into my comfy, cozy bed, I flipped onto my stomach, my favorite sleeping position. I was happily dozing off when I remembered that my new chiropractor had recently reminded me that in the interest of my health, I needed to sleep on my back or on my side.
Then began the debate in my sleepy head. Do I disturb my comfortable self and switch out of my favorite position in the interest of future benefit or do I, just this time because, I'm oh so comfortable right now, stay where I am?
Then I had an insight that the mini-debate going on in my head echoes a bigger debate that we always have on some level when we are seeking to make a change for the better in our lives. It is always more comfortable and less effort to stay in the old habit. It makes no difference whether that old habit is thinking and acting like someone who deserves to earn minimum wage or someone who is overeating and under-exercising. The old way is always the easy way.
The only problem with the old way is that it will always get us the same results as it always has; when we've reached the place where we find ourselves engaging in the inner debate about what to do, we've already decided that there's something we want to be different. We want a new experience.
So, that means we have to momentarily discard the comfortable old-going-nowhere-new position and roll over.
My new, healthier self triumphed. I rolled over and went to sleep.
